"What 4-H Means to Me" speech at Achievement Night

If you did not attend Achievement Night in October 2008, you missed a fantastic little speech given by 9-year-old Stephanie entitled "What 4-H Means to Me". The story along with the speech was submitted to all the Douglas County hubs on www.yourhub.com.

Here's a link to one of them: http://denver.yourhub.com/LoneTree/Stories/Goings-on/Story~563434.aspx

I hope you take look. She did a good job.

Crystal Darkness Event

On Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 the broadcasters of Colorado are teaming together to air a Telly and Emmy Award winning documentary called Childhelp Crystal Darkness aimed at fighting back against the scourge of crystal methamphetamine. Nearly every broadcaster in the state will be participating and they will be pre-empting all programming to air this in unison. It's an unprecedented event in the history of the state.

Thanks to the generous donated participation by local broadcasters, the program airs at 6:30 p.m. on nearly every TV station in Colorado! Several radio stations will be airing an audio version at the same time. There is also a Spanish version of the documentary that will air on Spanish TV stations at 5:30 p.m. that same day.

It’s VERY important that you make this the top priority for you and your family to watch this historic program. Invite neighbors and friends to watch it with you. Meth is a drug that is tearing apart families and communities and your children are being targeted. It’s time for Colorado to fight back!

The documentary was filmed in Colorado at the end of October and features interviews with Governor Bill Ritter and the First Lady Jeannie Ritter as well as Attorney General John Suthers, and dozens of community leaders, law enforcement officials, recovery specialists and local recovering meth addicts.

During the airing of the program, a call center will be set up with local recovery experts with about 80 phones lines ready to answer the calls for information and help. People will be able to call in on the 211 phone number to get assistance.

Wanted: leaders and lima beans

What do those two things have to do with each other? We'd like more leaders and canned food items coming to the monthly Leader's Council meetings. We love seeing all the leader "regulars" at council. We'd be ecstatic to see all you irregulars there too :)

But seriously, issues are discussed, decisions are made, remedies are sought, friendships are forged, crises are averted, and sometimes Mary Baldwin does a tap dance routine. See what I mean?

It is incredibly important that all 4-H leaders get involved, not just organizational leaders. We really encourage all leaders to come to the next Leader's Council meeting on Monday, January 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office in a downstairs conference room. We'll be planning 2009 in more detail and want ideas and input from leaders. After all, a new agent will be coming on board some time in the near future, and wouldn't it be great if we had some fabulous plans in place. If you are a project leader, there's information you especially need to hear.

And what do lima beans have to do with anything? This year, the council's community service project is to donate canned food/pantry items to local charities at every council meeting. So bring that can of fruit cocktail or the whole wheat pasta your family can live without and let's get down to business.

See you there!

Seeking Douglas County 4-H videos

Hello DC 4-H members,

In looking forward to our new year in 4-H, I'd like to jazz up the blog and really use all the capabilities available to us. One way to do that is to post 4-H related videos, which must be uploaded to youtube first and then embedded into our site.

I am looking for videos on every 4-H subject we can think of: cake decorating demonstrations, interviews of award-winning judging teams (i.e. our meat judging national champs), various animal shows, activities like the Fashion Revue, community service events, instructional videos for new 4-H members, fun stuff like the holiday dance, officer training, Leader of the Year interview, etc. The list is almost endless.

I found one 4-H blog that has lots of videos you can check out: http://www.4-hnews.blogspot.com/

Please contact Melody at the 4-H office ASAP to discuss ideas, make plans, and get going! The number is 720-733-6940 or by email at mjones@douglas.co.us.

We want your opinion, Douglas County 4-H

Please check your email for an important survey on the issue below. I do not want to post the survey here as we don't want the whole world voting on this issue!

As we plan for the 2009 Douglas County Fair and Rodeo, we are seeking your opinion.

Some Douglas County 4-H members have expressed the desire to wear, use, or exhibit fair awards during the fair rather than receiving awards at the end of fair at the Ice Cream Social. There are differing opinions among 4-H'ers, parents, and superintendents about whether to continue showcasing 4-H fair award recipients at the Ice Cream Social (started in 2003).

We will collect votes until January 12, 2009. Votes cast after that date will not be counted.

Again, check your email. The survey was sent around 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 18.

Douglas County 4-H member published in newspaper

We're all about passing on good news here in Douglas County. A 4-H member and one of our ambassadors, Selena Giers, had an article entitled "Stock show's impact no bull" published in the Rocky Mountain News yesterday.

"Since I can remember, the National Western Stock Show has been something I have looked forward to each year. But I never realized just how great an impact it has not only on the rural way of living, but also on Denver.

According to the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo Web site, 2008 had huge attendance numbers..." for the rest of the story, please go to this link: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/dec/10/giers-stock-shows-impact-no-bull/

Good job, Selena!

Ramblings on being thankful

I seem to be suffering writer's block this week, so I decided I can always talk about being thankful for you all.

Even though Thanksgiving is over, being thankful for the Douglas County 4-H Program members and staff isn't.

As the newest member of the team, I've had a lot to learn about how 4-H works - and I'm still learning! Just when I think I know something, I find out I don't. I appreciate the ongoing patience of the 4-H staff and all 4-H families as I continue forward.

Thank you to...

Kathe Jackson, knower of all things 4-H. Without her, where would I be in my 4-H learning curve.

Mary Baldwin, dedicated 4-H Agent. Without her keeping the 4-H ship afloat along with Kathe, where would the whole office be, much less me.

4-H members, the reason we all do this. I have had the opportunity to get to know a few of you and it makes me realize how much I enjoy working with youth. You guys are wonderful.

4-H parents and volunteers, without whom there would be no 4-H. I've also had the opportunity to get to know a few of you as well. Thank you for making me welcome this last year and a half.

I'm sure the muse will visit me soon, and I'll have more to post on the blog later this week!

Melody

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…

Information you gotta have...

4-H Inclement Weather Policy

‘Tis the season when bad weather can shut down the entire county. The policy for county 4-H activities, committee meetings and events when the weather is bad is as follows: when Douglas County shuts down county offices, all county 4-H events or meetings on that date will be cancelled. Call the Extension Office (720-733-6940) if you question whether or not an event has been cancelled. We will leave a message on our voicemail confirming the cancellation. Re-scheduling (if possible) will be done at the 4-H office. Each 4-H club is urged to decide what to do when bad weather happens and how to communicate that decision to everyone in the club.

Got pics?

Has your club been involved in fun and interesting activities recently? Or is scheduled to do something cool? Take pictures and then...

Send me pictures! (oh, this is Melody) I'll post what I can here on the blog, so make sure any pics you send me can be posted on a public site. In other words, parents of all kids in all pictures must be okay with it!

Thank you, Douglas County 4-H families.

For those interested in agriculture - 2008 Farm Income Forecast

I know several 4-H'ers are studying agriculture, so I am passing on some information.

"Net farm income is forecast to be $86.9 billion in 2008, little changed from the record $86.8 billion farmers are estimated to have earned in 2007, and 42% above the 10-year average of $61.1 billion. Net cash income, at $90.7 billion, is forecast to be $3.3 billion (4%) above 2007 and 33% above its 10-year average of $68 billion. Net cash income is projected to rise more than net farm income because of the carryover of 2007 crops, which are being sold in 2008. "

Role Models Roll Up Their Sleeves

What better way to show the world the value of 4-H than to be a good role model? Everyday we have 4-H members and leaders volunteering their time to make the communities we live in better places.

I received an email just the other day from a parent I didn't even know. It told me of two of our 4-H members who had made a difference by reading to school students and telling them about the 4-H program. Those two young ladies, Selena Giers and Natalie Roberts, are the 2009 4-H Ambassadors for Douglas County. Although most of their duties center around the Douglas County Fair, they have taken it upon themselves to be Ambassadors throughout the year.

Of course you don't have to be an Ambassador to make a difference. Our clubs do community service projects all the time. As individuals, every age of 4-Her helped with our recent Cloverbud Fun Night. We have amazing kids in our program (and adults too) and I hope that all of you will "toot your own horns" about how you are getting involved in being good role models.

It's great to be part of the 4-H program!

Thanks for reading.

The state website has been down

Just an FYI - if you've been trying to access 4-H information on the state website and have had trouble, that's because they've been working on it intermittently for the last few weeks. The website we maintain has a broken link as well (the button that says sec/treas books), and I can't fix it until the state website is up and running. We have no ETA at this time for the state website.

Thank you for your patience.

Timely re-post: The Art of Gratitude and 4-H

This was originally posted March 4, 2008. It is something that we feel strongly enough about that we wanted to post it again. We're seeing some changes in Douglas County that are happening in large part because hard-working 4-H volunteers and long-time sponsors do not receive thank you's or any expression of gratitude. Did all of you thank ALL those who deserved it this last 4-H year?

"What is gratitude? The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as a noun meaning the state of being grateful; thankfulness. This is a most basic definition, but gratitude is so much more, don’t you think?

Gratitude is taking the time to reflect upon your blessings, appreciate what you already have, give to others without expectations, and notice the small things that make the world a beautiful place.

The 4-H program values gratitude. A basic tenet is that 4-H members thank the many volunteers and contributors that make the program a success.

Without volunteers, we would have no project leaders willingly sharing knowledge. There would be no superintendents spending hours and hours making sure activities and functions happen. There would be no sponsors providing financial assistance so that 4-H members receive belt buckles, trophies, and monetary awards.

In short, 4-H volunteers and contributors are our blessings.

Have you thanked them? Did you send each and every sponsor a formal thank you note after last year’s fair? Do you tell your leaders thank you at meetings? How do you show your gratitude in the 4-H Program?"

“In our daily lives, we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but the gratefulness that makes us happy.” Albert Clarke

New local online resource for teens

I just ran across a new website resource specifically for metro area teens called iTeenDenver. They have a print magazine as well. Here is a snippet from their press release:

"On our website teens will be able to submit their own articles, poetry, short stories, photography, and art for other teens to enjoy online and some of those will be printed in our bi-monthly magazine! Teens can "Enter to Win" tons of cool stuff including movie passes, gas cards, gift certificates, coupons, discounts and lots of other FREE stuff. There will also be informational and educational articles written by professionals on topics of interest to teens.

Teens can also blog with other local teens on topics such as sports, health, environment, school, colleges, fashion, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, science, fiction, books, music, movies and global issues. We will allow local companies and organizations to submit postings that offer you community service opportunities as well as part - time job opportunities.

The community calendar is open to the schools, churches, clubs and other organizations that is open to the public sure to promote that event for FREE on our calendar. "

I was thinking this might be a good opportunity for our older 4-H members to write about Douglas County 4-H, whether it's within their blogs or another article. I took a look at their website and it looks pretty cool. Here's the link if you'd like to take a look: http://www.iteendenver.com/

Congratulations DC 4-H Meat Judging Team!

The Douglas County 4-H Meat Judging team won the National Champion title at the 2008 American Royal Stock Show National 4-H Meat Evaluation and Identification Contest. Held on October 28, 2008 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Colorado competed with 11 state teams in categories like beef and pork judging, retail id, retail cuts, and reasons.

Receiving a $500 award, champion team members Jordan McHenry of Castle Rock, Natalie Roberts of Castle Rock, Logan Lenz of Castle Rock, and Maggie Weinroth of Sedalia were coached by Paul Clayton, Terra Thorpe, and Kevin Smith. “We are very proud of these 4-H’ers,” said Terra Thorpe. “Their hard work and dedication has made them true champions. We hope this opportunity will provide a very bright future for them.” Jordan McHenry also received a $750 scholarship for her second high individual placing.

The 4-H team would like to thank their parents, the coaches, National Western Stock Show Jr. Livestock Sale Committee, Colorado State University Meat Judging Team, Colorado State University Animal Science Department, Colorado State 4-H Foundation, and the Douglas County 4-H Council for their help and sponsorship of this program.

Congratulations from the 4-H staff!

4-H'ers, you can enter the 2009 Team America Rocketry Challenge

Take a look at this opportunity to compete in a rocketry contest. If you win, you could go earn a scholarship or go to Paris!

"Registration is now open for the 2009 Team America Rocketry Challenge, the world's largest rocket contest challenging participants to compete for $60,000 in prizes and scholarships and a trip to next year's international air show in Paris. Contest rules and registration are at www.rocketcontest.org. Participation is limited to the first 750 teams who register by Monday, December 1.

The Challenge: Teams must design and build a rocket containing a raw egg that will climb to 750 feet and stay aloft for 45 seconds. This year's new task is transporting the one-egg payload lying on its side rather than positioned vertically, mimicking the position of an astronaut.

Students in grades 7-12 in any U.S. school or non-profit youth organization are eligible to compete. About 7,000 students from across the country took part in the contest in 2008, and since TARC's first contest in 2003, almost 50,000 students have taken the challenge. A 4-H team from Washington County, WI http://www.4hrocketry.org/ placed 15th in TARC nationally in 2007.

Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) sponsors the contest with the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), NASA, the Defense Department, and AIA member companies. NAR www.nar.org is a partner with 4-H and specifically invites 4-H groups to try TARC.

The rocket contest gives future engineers the opportunity to demonstrate their math and physics skills. Working together in a team environment, they will design a real aerospace product, which will be put through the rigors of testing and evaluation. For more details download the Handbook and Rules documents and get started with your 4-H Rocketry Team right away!"

Volunteers needed to help home for senior animals at Dreampower Ranch

The 4-H community is a generous one, so I thought of you all when I saw a story on yourhub.com about a sanctuary for older and unwanted animals that may be forced to close down.

The PAALS Program (People and Animals Living Synergistically) resides at the 160-acre Dreampower Ranch and consists of 200 animals and several senior volunteers that live on site to help care for them. This progam was started ten years ago by Diane Benedict with a vision of providing lifelong care for these animals.

According to the article, animals at the Dreampower Ranch include not only dogs and cats but horses, donkeys, chickens, goats, potbelly pigs, mules and a long-horned steer named Chico. Funding is provided through individuals, groups, organizations and companies.

The ranch is need of carpenters, people to help raise barns, and monetary donations to keep the ranch running. For more information, log on to http://www.paalsforlife.com/ or call 303-688-9537.

The Dreampower Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit corporation that supports the PAALS Program. Monetary donations can be sent to PAALS, P.O. Box 926, Castle Rock, CO 80104.

Douglas County DARE Officers to Present Drug Education and Prevention Class for Parents

Passing on information and an opportunity to 4-H parents...

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. Officers will be presenting a class for parents on Over the Counter and Prescription Drugs. This is designed to inform parents of the dangers that are facing the youth of our community today and what how parents can be prepared to deal with this problem with their own kids. There are two dates the classes will be presented, Thursday November 6th at Chaparrel High School in Parker and Tuesday November 11th at Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch. Both classes will be held from 6:30-8:00 pm in the school auditorium. Please RSVP at DARE@dcsheriff.net by November 3rd.

Prescription drugs and Over the Counter Medications are currently among the substances most commonly abused by young people in the United States. Both are readily available and can easily be obtained by teenagers who abuse these drugs to experience a variety of desired effects. Often these young people are unaware of the serious health risks involved in abusing these medications. Increasingly younger adolescents obtain prescription drugs from classmates, friends, and family members, or they steal the drugs from school medicine dispensaries and from people for whom the drug had been legitimately prescribed.

D.A.R.E. Officers are concerned about this alarming trend and want to make parents and caregivers of teens aware of the facts and prepared to deal with these issues.

We encourage you to sign up for this informative class.

4-H and the movie "The Secret Life of Bees"

It's always fun to find out who has connections to 4-H.

A recently released fantastic little movie called "The Secret Life of Bees" has a 4-H connection. The original author is Sue Monk Kidd who credits her 4-H experience in entomology and reading as "a positive force in her life and career".

The National 4-H Council has teamed with the makers of this film to support efforts regarding Science, Engineering and Technology in 4-H. This is the big national focus right now in 4-H.

Visit http://www.4-h.org/ to read her full story, find out more about the movie, and go on a "backstage tour".

DC Achievement Night

It's been a week since Achievement Night festivities - can you believe it? Please take a look at the newsletter for award recipients or come into the office to pick up an Achievement Night program located in the paper holders in the office.

Some pictures of the night have been posted in the right column for your viewing pleasure. If anyone has more, feel free to send them on to Melody.

A big thank you goes to the volunteers who came in to help us get ready for the night as well as those who offered, Mary Baldwin for soldiering forward as the sole 4-H Agent, Kathe Jackson for the innumerable tasks she has to complete to make this happen (you don't even know what it takes - wow!), other Extension staff who chipped in, the interim director JoAnn Powell who drove down from Ft. Collins just for this event, members and leaders who volunteered to speak and present awards, the Events Center crew who set up the room for us and then very patiently made changes on the fly, the crew that helped decorate for the evening and then helped clean up, the commissioners for taking time to attend and then donating to 4-H through our little scarecrow auction, and the husbands at home who had to weather the 4-H staff's late nights, wild-eyed hysteria, and lack of time to go grocery shopping.

Thank you everybody!

Time to write holiday cards to troops, 4-H

Again this year Douglas County 4-H will be sending holiday cards to those serving our country through the military. All clubs are welcome to participate. Buy a card, make a card, or write a letter – all are appreciated.

Thanks Douglas County 4-H!

New award for high school students interested in science and technology

The national push in 4-H is to focus more on science and technology. For those interested in these subjects, a new award has become available.

The Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards combine education, innovation and entrepreneurship by challenging high school students to design products using science and technology. The competition includes platforms in personal spaceflight, lunar exploration and renewable energy.

To compete, teams develop their concept, submit a business plan, and become public Ambassadors for their ideas. Students will compete for over $120,000 of prize money as well as the opportunities to connect with leading scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The awards create a long term community for students and teachers that provides the resources and opportunities needed to develop and incubate commercial products. The competition is just the beginning of this journey.

Help needed for Western Region 4-H Leader’s Forum

The state office is asking for support for this event. Here is their plea:

"WRLF needs your support! Colorado is hosting this event next February but we need your help now. The planning committee has a $20,000 fund-raising goal to help offset the registration fees for volunteers attending the event. WRLF only comes to Colorado every 13 years and we’d like to invite 4-H clubs, councils and foundations to join us all in financially supporting the event. If all our clubs could contribute $10 - $25 and councils contribute $50 - $100 we would be very close to meeting our goal. Please support our Colorado 4-H leaders with WRLF. Thanks!

Get to know the 4-H staff: Mary Baldwin

Just when Mary thought I had forgotten about this series, I accosted her this morning and extracted some of her life story for our reading pleasure.

Mary was born in Wauseon, Ohio and raised in Fayette in the same state. She's lived in three other states including Michigan, Kansas, and Colorado. She and her husband of "many" years, Gary, have been back in Colorado since May 2005.

They have two children, Melissa and Katie. Melissa is married and lives in Wichita, Kansas. She works as a medical technologist specializing in genetics. Katie is a world traveler currently attending Purdue University in Indiana. She plans to move to Washington DC in January with her new husband to work for the USDA.

Mary has a unique and interesting work history that includes her own craft business, working in unemployment insurance, taking notes for an eye doctor during patient visits, teaching english as a second language, and working as a postal worker in a small town where she gained a reputation as the speediest worker they'd ever seen! Also, she and her husband and his bothers currently own a business located in Cherry Creek.

In the old days, Mary used to love to go water-skiing. Now she loves to go fishing and is an avid reader.

Favorites list:
  • color: blue
  • food: calamari
  • movies: The Searchers, Pretty Woman, Miss Congeniality, Star Wars, and pretty much anything with Harrison Ford in it
  • Surprising fact: She's been "frogging" before in search of that delicacy, frog legs. While she had a lot of fun, no frogs were ever captured.

And so there you go - that's all three of the current 4-H staff! We'll get to know the new agent as soon as we can here on the blog.

The generosity of 4-H families is unparalleled....

Really - I always brag about the Douglas County 4-H community. And so I thought of you all when I read about a problem in our local communities.

All the food banks in our county are running very low, and in fact, this is a common theme this year.

In an effort to help, all DC libraries are waiving library fines in exchange for non-perishable food items from Monday, September 22 through Monday, October 20.

Food banks are most in need of boxed dinners, pasta, rice, and canned meats. Drop off these items at the Bookmobile or at any of the library branches.

New kids' cooking show produced in Denver

I've noticed that we have quite a few young cooks here in 4-H. There is a new kids' cooking show on local television called The Kitcheneers. It's on Comcast Channel 8 on weekday mornings at 7:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. It's hosted by a seven year old and is aimed at kids 6 - 12 years old. The focus is on education youngsters on foods in a fun and entertaining way.

I have not checked out their website, but I wonder if there's a way for some 4-H kids to be part of the show, or at least the audience (if there is one). If you want to check it out, the website is http://www.thekitcheneers.com/.

4-H goes to Highlands Ranch Days

Every year, the Highlands Ranch Community Association hosts a popular event called Highlands Ranch Days where they focus on the western heritage of that area. Believe it or not, Highlands Ranch used to have lots of, well, real ranches. They always invite 4-H to have a booth there.

This year, we displayed several poster boards, some projects like a cake showing cake decorating techniques and an entomology project, and hosted a craft project relating to rocketry. Pretty soon, Mary and I decided we were in the wrong line of work after we opened the very popular 4-H Tattoo Parlor and then did nothing but that for hours and hours! Lots of kids went home with the 4-H clover logo emblazoned on their faces.

We also had several animals on display including friendly sheep, show chickens, rabbits, goats that acted more like pet dogs, and Cocopuff the miniature horse. This is one sure way to get people over to the booth. Kids can't be stopped, so parents and teachers come along and then we rope them in with all the great things about 4-H. Several people signed up for more information, and we're hoping SOMEBODY will be interested in starting a new 4-H club in the area (please, please, please - with fingers crossed).

A big thank you to several 4-H families for volunteering to help by bringing animals and patiently teaching the public all about them: Bramwell, Collins, Weinroth, and Goodson. We also had help running the booth and craft table from Stacia Bodnar, Lisa Stead, and Elizabeth Roth. Many thanks to all of you.

Come back next year!

Have you missed us?

Hello! It's been a little slow on the blog this week. The main writer, Melody, has been out of the office to attend to family matters and the other writer, Mary, had to hold down the fort because Kathe was gone on vacation at the same time.

So what can you look forward to next week? New pictures from Highlands Ranch Days added to the right column; a posting on how HR Days went; a new poll IF I can get it to work correctly; any other new or updated information I find as I go through emails; any community headlines that may be of interest.

The week after that, we'll get to know Mary in the "getting to know the staff better" series. I know, I know - I promised it would happen this week, but circumstances prevented it from getting done.

Thank you for your patience about the uncharacteristically slow blog.....

4-H'ers, you could ride to school with an NFL player

CSU sent this info to us, and we're passing it on. How cool would it be to arrive at school in a limo with one of the Broncos?

The NFL Take a Player to School program is a joint initiative between JCPenney Afterschool and the National Football League centers on inspiring youth to make the most of their in-school and afterschool time by making smart and healthy choices and by setting goals and working to achieve them. There is no purchase necessary and the program is open to all kids ages 6-13.

Between July 28th and September 29th kids can pick up an entry form at any JCPenney store or go to jcp.com or NFLRUSH.com to register (no purchase necessary). Thirty-four lucky students from around the country will have the opportunity to ride to school with an NFL player in a limousine and join him in leading their class during a special Take a Player to School gym class. The players will share personal experiences with the students and emphasize the important roles that academics, health and fitness played in turning their dreams into reality.

Melody Jones has been with Douglas County 4-H since June 25, 2007. One of the first things Kathe said to her was "This is the worse time of year for a new person to start!" EEK! But she lived to tell about it and has now survived two fairs - although the first one is very hazy.

Melody is a Colorado native, born in Denver and raised in Palisade where she grew up literally amongst peach orchards. One of her first jobs was packing peaches where she had to keep a sharp eye out for the teenage boys who thought it was funny to throw rotten peaches at everybody!

Many of you already know Melody comes from a social work background. She began her career working in Mesa County for two years, and then moved to the metro area in 1991 where she worked for a social services agency until 2006. She worked only with the adolescent population - a fact that befuddled all her friends as they couldn't imagine hanging out with teenagers every day for so many years.

Melody's husband Dub, also a Colorado native, works in the Douglas County Clerk and Recorder's office and has a strong background in IT. They live in Parker with two energetic dogs: Hunter the chocolate lab, and Lacey the tri-color beagle.

Melody is a crafter from way back and can't name only one favorite craft, but she makes jewelry and does scrapbooking, collage, papermaking, decoupage, card making, painting and probably more - she just can't remember. She's excited to report that she recently sold several jewelry items in her sister's retail store in Grand Junction!

Her favorites list:
  • color: purple
  • food: ice cream
  • movie: Saving Private Ryan, Breakfast Club, Big - too many to name
  • music: Celtic, classic rock, new age, 80's - ok, so she's an 80's girl!

Surprising fact: She has a large library of books on metaphysical and paranormal subjects -because the world is a weird and wonderful place.

Next week, we'll get to know Mary Baldwin a little bit better.

Window Display Contest for 4-H Clubs

*This contest pending approval by the 4-H Council.

As National 4-H Week draws near (October 5-11), we’d like to get the word out about what 4-H can offer families. Here are the contest details:
  • The theme this year is “4-H…More Than You Ever Imagined!”

  • Each club completes a window display in a place of business or public contact (retail, rec centers, libraries, restaurants).

  • Window displays can be painted or they can be objects/posters/photos/etc placed in a window. Be creative.

  • Your display must include both of the following phrases: “4-H…More Than You Ever Imagined!” and “If you are interested in joining 4-H, please call the 4-H office at 720-733-6940 or email 4-H@douglas.co.us.”

  • Displays must be available for viewing between October 4th and October 12th.

  • Windows in all Douglas County cities and towns are eligible. We would like to see a particular focus on the northern end of the county including Highlands Ranch, Parker, and Lone Tree.
  • Displays will be judged during National 4-H Week from October 5th through the 11th.

Awards:
First place display: $300
Second place display: $200
Third place display: $100

Note: Only two clubs participated last year! But hey, they earned $300 and $200....could YOUR club have used that money at all??

Questions? Contact Melody at the Extension Office at 720-733-6940.

Last year's entries - keep in mind it's hard to take photos of windows!

Get to know the 4-H staff: Kathe Jackson

Most of you have had some sort of contact with that Douglas County 4-H icon Kathe Jackson. Let's face it, she's been the backbone of the 4-H office for 24 years! But how much do you really know about her?

Kathe is a Colorado native born in Salida, but raised in Colorado Springs. Currently, she lives in Franktown with her husband of 40 years, Ernie.

Kathe has two daughters, Kelli and Jodi. Kelli is married and lives on a cattle ranch in Wyoming where she and her husband are raising three kids. Jodi lives in Wheatridge and is a very successful title closer for a company that works with foreclosures.

Prior to working as the 4-H secretary, Kathe was an aerobics instructor for 10 years while being a stay-at-home mom. For six years, Kathe was the organizational leader of the Castle Rock Aggies. Boasting 80 members, the club focused on sheep, hog, and beef projects. Kathe's daughters raised sheep, and she still has pictures behind her desk of their 4-H days.

One of Kathe's biggest hobbies is quilting. She also enjoys gardening, and we're thankful she has a green thumb as she keeps all the plants alive in the office. Her newest interest is photography.

What about the unusual spelling of her name? It has it's roots in third grade where there were so many "Kathy's" that it was the only way people knew which Kathe she was - and the spelling stuck.

Her favorites list:
  • color: green
  • food: Mexican
  • movie: Pretty Woman, and anything suspenseful
  • music: jazz, new age - no rap!
Surprising facts: Kathe was an active dirt bike rider, and she never turned down an opportunity to race her GTO!

Watch for more "getting to know the staff" postings.

4-H and taxes

And now for a serious moment here in 4-H - taxes. The state office has an update for 4-H clubs that I will quote here for you:

There will be no penalties for 4-H clubs earning less than $25,000 who do not file an ePostcard in 2008. Those earning more than $25,000 will continue to be subject to the 990 requirements for filing. The state anticipates having more details from the IRS when they have completed processing the database.

Chartered 4-H clubs and qualified affiliated groups under GEN 2704 should be contacting the State 4-H Office for all tax exempt issues and not National 4-H Headquarters or the IRS. The IRS has requested that any information and direction be provided from the state office to National 4-H Headquarters as the parent organization. National 4-H Headquarters then has the responsibility to provide updates, assistance, and respond to questions from State 4-H offices.

For all issues about status under GEN 2704, whether the group is requesting an EIN (SS-4 form) or inclusion under GEN 2704, or questions related to filing requirements, determination letters, or general status questions, all state and local groups should start with the State 4-H office.

In March 2008, National 4-H Headquarters forwarded to the IRS the listings of all authorized 4 H entities and has been waiting for the IRS to finish updating the list. The IRS has encountered delays in completing the processing of our lists for several reasons including: 1) there are far more entities requesting inclusion as subsidiaries than the IRS anticipated; 2) there continues to be significant errors with Employee Identification Numbers (EIN) listed for thousands of the 4-H entities certified; 3) the IRS is questioning the inclusion of some affiliated organizations which typically are considered independent organizations rather than program groups; and 4) there are questions on both the part of the IRS and National 4-H Headquarters regarding which requirements apply to 4-H, given that 4-H is a unique entity unlike any other organization.

The IRS is working to both clarify the actual tax exempt status for 4-H, and to identify ways to coordinate the lists of 4-H entities more efficiently and effectively in the future.

Due to the delays in processing the 4-H listings for groups requesting inclusion, and the data cleaning that will need to take place to correct the EIN's, National 4-H Headquarters has negotiated with the IRS that there will be no penalties for 4-H subsidiaries earning less than $25,000 who do not electronically file for the remainder of 2008.

Stay tuned for more updates as they become available. All questions need to be directed to the State 4-H office.

Thank you and goodbye summer staff....

As county fair season draws to a close, we realized that tomorrow is the last day our summer staff will be here: Dylan Wilson, the summer secretary, and Noah VanBibber, the intern.

Dylan has been great. She has a ready smile, jumps in when we need her, and doesn't shy away from hard work. It's been a real asset to have someone here who was a 4-H member and is familiar with how it works in Douglas County. This weekend, Dylan heads back up to her sorority at UNC, Delta Zeta, and it's right back into college life. No rest for the weary!

This has been Noah's third year as our intern. He took on much of Alexa's agent-level fair responsibilities regarding livestock and horse and did a fantastic job. It's true that he does not have a master's degree, but it was clear that his numerous years in 4-H and intern time in the office helped prepare him for the difficult role he took on. I think it's safe to say that a brand new intern couldn't have done it. From our hearts, we truly mean it when we say we couldn't have done it without him!

Thank you both.

Are you a freshman at CSU? Read this!

4-H'ers who are attending CSU as freshmen can apply to be a 4-H Scholar. The Scholars promote the positive experiences they had in 4-H and spend up to 20 hours a month representing 4-H at key activities, speaking at public events, and meeting with stakeholders and donors.

For their efforts, each Scholar receives training, public relations support materials, reimbursement for expenses, and a $1,500 annual stipend toward college expenses. The person selected is eligible to continue to serve as a Scholar throughout their college career - advancing with each grade level - as long as their grades and activity commitments are met. The freshmen applicants must be willing to make a four-year commitment.

To apply, interested persons enrolled at Colorado State University must submit the following to Gary Small, 106 University Square, Fort Collins, CO 80523-4050 by October 1, 2008:

  • complete résumé that includes 4-H experiences, years in projects, leadership and speaking experiences and skills, community service activities, work-related experiences, awards and special recognitions.
  • A (draft) letter of thanks to the Colorado Farm Bureau thanking them for their contribution and funding support for the 4-H Scholars Program;
  • A short paragraph (100 words or less) explaining why they wish to become involved in the 4-H Scholars Program;
  • a personal statement of desire for the Scholar position.

Individuals applying will make a 10-minute presentation before the selection committee on "the scope of 4-H today and what 4-H has meant to them."

Please direct questions to Gary Small at 970.491.1537 or gary.small@colostate.edu.

We Were Sweating Bullets

Last weekend the Douglas County Shoot gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "sweating bullets." You would think that the 100 degree temperatures would put people in less than agreeable moods, but not even the sweltering temperatures could put a damper on the enthusiasm displayed by 4-Hers, leaders, and parents.

For this agent, it was a great learning experience. Yes, I still don't know the difference between some of the events, but I have a better understanding of why so many members are drawn to shooting sports. The competition with oneself and others, the camaraderie of the members, and the caring of the shooting sports leaders just make the program exemplary. The emphasis on safety in each discipline contributes to the overall quality of the program also.

As you can see from the pictures here on the blog, 4-Hers are able to learn a variety of shooting sports disciplines. Anyone interested in the program can call our office or ask their club leader about the shooting sports projects.

Thanks to all those who helped with the Douglas County Shoot and survived the heat. You are a great bunch of dedicated people!

Thanks for reading.

Study shows significant drop in activity once kids become teens

According to a 9news.com report, findings released on Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association show that 9 year olds average three hours a day of acitivity while 15 year olds get less than an hour. Pediatricians are concerned about increases in health problems for children such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Some doctors are recommending children as young as 8 years old be placed on cholesterol-lowering medications if tests indicate high cholesterol levels. Sedentary activities such as video games and participation in social networking sites online are partly to blame.

4-H can play an important role in helping youngsters maintain higher activity levels and healthier lifestyles, affecting them positively throughout their adulthood.

Good news for Douglas County 4-H! Oh, and we need volunteers...

Hey 4-H gang,

Some of our Highlands Ranch promotional efforts are paying off. The Highlands Ranch Whole Foods Market has asked us to staff a booth at their Farmers and Food Artisans Road Tour 2008 on Sunday, August 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They are working to raise awareness for local farmers, and they want to include 4-H.

But that's not even the best part. They have also adopted Douglas County 4-H as their beneficiary for this quarter. They are donating 5% of total sales on Tuesday, August 19th!

So we need a little help:
  • kids to volunteer for the booth on Sunday, August 17th. Set up will start at 10:00 a.m. and tear down will commence at 3:00 p.m. until completed.
  • shoppers to go to the Highlands Ranch Whole Foods on the 19th and spend a little money.
  • word of mouth - let friends and family know to shop there too!

Call Melody at the office to volunteer or if you have questions.

Help Wanted for 2009 Western Region 4-H Leader’s Forum

Every 13 years Colorado takes a turn at hosting the Western Region 4-H Leader’s Forum (WRLF). In 2009 it will be Colorado's turn, and the event is scheduled on Feb. 25-29 in Denver. More than 30 volunteers on the planning committee attended a meeting during State 4-H Conference to continue their dedicated work on WRLF.

What is WRLF? It’s the most comprehensive training opportunity for 4-H volunteers in the Western United States. It’s also a great place to network, learn from new and experienced leaders, and get re-energized! There’s still time to get workshops submitted for WRLF. Proposal forms are at: http://colorado4h.org/wrlf09/workshopstours.shtml

The state is asking for help. Please go to this page and scroll down to see details and contact information: http://www.colorado4h.org/communications/update/2008/080711.shtml.

Help teens raise awareness for Alzheimer's

4-H'ers so often make a difference in the community, that we thought we would share information about another group of teens making a difference. It may also be a way for any interested 4-H members to get involved in a good cause.

"Teens Who Care or TWC as they like to be called, have joined up to walk in this year's Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk ® on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Denver's City Park. Teens Who Care was formed by sophomore Jacquelyn Palmer in honor of her grandmother, Rebecca E. Bouquet, who died from Alzheimer's disease.

The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk ® is a grassroots fundraiser in which volunteers of all ages become champions in the fight for a world without Alzheimer's.

Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer education, counseling, support groups, 24-hour Helpline and research to find better treatments and eventually a cure for this fatal disease. More than 7,000 people will gather pledges and come out to walk in support of the 65,000 people in Colorado who are living with Alzheimer's disease. Since 1989, Denver Memory Walks have raised nearly $6 million; statewide, Colorado Memory Walks have raised more than $10 million dollars. For information call the Alzheimer's Association at 303-813-1669, the Helpline at 800-272-3900, or visit www.alz.org/co. "

5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's today.

Canned food donations needed

Hello fantastic Douglas County 4-H Program,

Please open your hearts and your pantries to help Douglas County families in need. One of our 4-H clubs, Hooves and Arrows, has arranged for a canned food donation area at the 2008 County Shoot on Saturday, July 19th. They'll be there from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

The shoot is at the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Range in Sedalia. From Castle Rock, take Highway 85 north just past Louviers. The range is on the east side of the road. Just follow the signs to the donation area!

This year, food banks are running low. Your donations will benefit a program called Care and Share. Even if you aren't participating in the shoot, you can still donate!

Thank you for your help.

Peachy Keen 4-H Fund Raiser

Peach pie, peach jam, peach cobbler, peaches on ice cream, fresh peaches - these are a few of my favorite things in August and September in Colorado! If visions of these treats are dancing in your head now, you should know about the Annual 4-H Exchange Peach Sale.

In order to earn money for an exchange with 4-Hers in Delaware next summer, the Douglas County 4-H Exchange members are ordering luscious Palisade peaches. The peaches come in a 25 pound box and your cost is $35. This year all orders must be made by August 18 and delivery to Kirk Hall on the Douglas County fairgrounds will be September 4. To order, contact any exchange member or sign up for your peaches on the order sheet on the 4-H Office bulletin board.

The exchange is a great experience for 4-Hers who want to understand the history and cultures of other areas of the U.S. When our 4-Hers travel to Delaware they may have the chance to go crabbing, learn about colonial times, see the similarities and differences in 4-Hers' family life in another state, and just plain have fun. They may even plan a day in our nation's capital, a experience every citizen should have and appreciate.

Palisade has the best peaches and Douglas County 4-H has the best kids. Why not support both?

Thanks for reading.
